EBU publishes Loudness Distribution Guidelines

The EBU has published a new Guidelines document that describes how to deal with loudness in the distribution and receiving parts of the broadcast chain. This extensive publication marks the completion of the planned set of Loudness documents, which together cover the complete broadcast production and distribution environment.

Practical advice

The publications offer practical advice on how to measure and normalise audio to prevent annoying level jumps for the audience and to increase overall audio quality.

                     1. EBU R 128 Loudness Recommendation
    2. EBU Tech 3341 Metering Specification
    3. EBU Tech 3342 Loudness Range Descriptor
    4. EBU Tech 3343 Production Guidelines
    5. EBU Tech 3344 Distribution Guidelines

A real audio revolution

The introduction of loudness metering and normalisation forms a real audio revolution. The EBU's work has been possible thanks to the dedicated input of many audio professionals around the world participating in the EBU PLOUD Group , which is chaired by the charismatic Tonmeister Florian Camerer (ORF).

The Distribution Guidelines were developed under leadership of Richard van Everdingen. The publication not only provides advice to distribution parties, such as cable operators, but it also provides a very detailed overview of audio level differences in CE equipment (and how to address those).
