EBU improves IP intercom interoperability

After nearly two years of work and exchanges with manufacturers, the EBU Intercom Interoperability over IP (I3P) Group has published EBU Tech 3347 "Audio over IP Production Intercoms Requirements for Interoperability".

Built on ACIP

The intercom work builds on the results of the EBU Audio Contribution over IP (ACIP) Group, which issued its first "Audio Contribution over IP Requirements for Interoperability" in EBU Tech 3326, in 2007.

The new intercom document provides a set of requirements that will provide audio interoperability between Intercom over IP devices from different brands. This is a true revolution in today's environment, where every broadcaster has to equip itself with a set of many different interfaces to be able to establish communication with multiple locations.

Plug-fest

Intercom equipment manufacturers, who are focussed on fulfilling broadcasters' needs in this domain, will now be able to include the EBU technical specifications in their development roadmap. EBU Tech 3347 will be "real-life" tested and enhanced during a plug-fest.

This interoperability test is not yet planned, but it may be held before the end of 2011. It all depends on the availability of the first designed-to-be-compliant products. For more information on this topic, please contact: Mathias Coinchon (EBU).
