Broadcasters indicate spectrum needs for wireless mics, OB, etc.

The EBU today published the replies to the EBU questionnaire on spectrum requirements for SAB/SAP (Services Ancillary to Broadcasting/Services Ancillary to Programme making) and ENG/OB (Electronic News Gathering/Outside Broadcasting services). The report is the first in the new 'EBU Technical Reports' series. Technical Reports typically provide an overview of the current situation regarding a specific technical topic.

Broadcasters use a wide range of frequencies for SAB/SAP and ENG/OB applications. This usage includes wireless microphones, intercom systems, wireless cameras, remote camera controls, airborne audio and video links, etc. The use of wireless production tools is increasing.

Broadcasters concerned

EBU members have concerns on the future access to adequate spectrum for these kinds of applications. The broadcasting bands are planned more densely for digital broadcasting than previously for analogue and in many countries there is a debate on releasing spectrum for other services. Additional spectrum is also likely to be cleared for wireless broadband access such as WiMAX. Consequently the availability of these frequencies for SAB/SAP applications becomes uncertain. The main findings out of the replies to the questionnaire are:

a) Spectrum demand for SAB/SAP is generally expected to grow in the foreseeable future.

b) The Bands IV/V are the most intensively used for audio SAP/SAB applications.

c) DVB-T and new mobile services in the band 790-862 MHz may imply spectrum unavailability.

d) It is expected that it will be difficult to find sufficient capacity for cordless cameras and video links.

e) CEPT Administrations are best positioned to assess overall spectrum requirements for SAP/SAB.

f) In assessing overall spectrum requirements average demand should be distinguished from peak demand.

g) Technical studies based on current and next generation equipment are necessary.

h) Clear regulation and sufficient amount of spectrum are required to ensure continuation of SAP/SAB operations. CEPT is invited to review the regulatory environment for SAP/SAB services in order to ensure continuation of their interference free operations.
