EBU gathers archive experience

A recent survey amongst EBU Members shows many broadcasters either have set up file-based archives or are planning to do so. It means these organisations are faced with technical and organisational choises, and technology-related problems. EBU TECHNICAL encourages broadcasters to share their experiences, aiming to take the best decisions.

Summer survey

The EBU Group on Archives, P/DATA, will this week send out a more detailed survey to identify key integration bottlenecks and best practices. Participating broadcasters will receive the (anonymous) results and the data will form the basis of an EBU TECHNICAL publication scheduled to appear after the IBC.

According to the Group's chairman, Mr Lodzikowski (Technical Director TVP), sharing information on problems, approaches and successes can help a lot in getting things right. He said: "I am positively surprised by the amount of openness people show in discussing their experiences. Newcomers, experienced broadcasters and manufacturers all benefit from this exchange."

Manufacturers key

To include the archive system manufacturers in the process, the P/DATA Group held several meetings with vendors already. "We started doing this a bit quickly, which meant not all Members had the chance to participate. But there will be more opportunities to meet with industry representatives. We are currently planning a technical meeting at the EBU for early September. And if there is enough interest, we can also do some quick visits to vendors during the IBC."

How to join

EBU Members and manufacturers interested in this work can join the Group via this page. If you wish to take part in the survey (and did not receive the invitation yet) or if you are at the IBC and wish to arrange a meeting, please send a short e-mail to: [email protected].
