Retention Management in the Digital Domain

Swedish Public Broadcaster SVT, the International Federation of Television Archives (IFTA) and the National Library of Sweden are jointly organising a seminar devoted to archive challenges.

Keeping the best...

The seminar is meant to help broadcasters and national archives deal with new challenges to the archivist's role, the archive business and the way we think about archiving. The main question to be answered is "What should be kept and for what purpose?".

Topics addressed, include (amongst others):

- Criteria for retention (raw materials, clips, media objects, complete rtv-programmes?)
- Websites
- Other digital representations
- Metadata quality criteria
- Metadata selection: what metadata will remain useful?

Theoretical & practical

The seminar will be held on 14 and 15 May 2009. Day 1,  'Context and Concepts', is reserved for more theoretical aspects. Day 2 is focussed on 'Projects and Practice' and focusses on pratical case studies.

Various EBU Members will be represented at the event, including speakers from the BBC, SVT, VRT and YLE. And there will be more in the audience. EBU TECHNICAL recently started the EBU P/DATA Group to help answer some of the more technically oriented questions around archiving and several Members of that Group already indicated to be attending the Stockholm event.
