The case for open source software - Follow up from OSCON 2014

The case for using open source software is well established. In fact, it is becoming rare for an organization not to use open source software.

There are many reasons for this: better interoperability with other organizations, computers and users; flexibility for deciding when to upgrade software; freedom from vendor lock-in; easy support options; the ability to see the code and adjust it to your needs, without license.

With technology changing on an almost daily basis and growing consumer expectations, one can only argue that collaboration is becoming essential. It’s this kind of forward thinking and approach that makes OSCON a success. As they say, “Go ahead, make it better.”

OSCON is the place where developers, innovators, businesspeople and investors come together to discuss, develop and collaborate on open source software.

Highlights from this year’s Convention include:  Microsoft Technologies announced it would bring support for more open source technologies to the Microsoft Azure platform (Packer.io); SAP declared its sponsorship of the open cloud projects OpenStack and Cloud Foundry;  Netflix continues to open source projects that focus on Amazon web services orchestration; PhoneGap released their framework as an Apache project called Cordova; and Mozilla unveiled its new mobile operating system - Firefox OS.

For broadcasters, many open source software tools already exist. For example, FFmpeg is an indispensible tool to manipulate video files and has been around since 2000. At EBU, we have started to gather all of the open source software related to broadcasting. Find out more about the EBU.IO project and contribute to the list.
