Cooperation between users and vendors is essential for the future success of a common approach to Quality Control in file-based production. This was the main conclusion of a well-attended workshop held at the IRT in Munich earlier this week. More than 140 participants from public and private broadcasters, industry vendors and other organizations were in attendance for the two-day event on "Current topics in file-based SD/HD production".
IRT is the research centre of the public broadcasters in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The workshop was initiated by a group representing the heads of IT and Planning departments at ARD, ZDF, ORF and SRG SSR - the Informations- und Systemtechnikkonferenz. In focusing on the topic of QC, the organizers addressed an increasingly complex set of challenges faced by broadcasters operating with file-based production systems.

Participants heard about the current status of QC systems from different perspectives: research, users and vendors. Aside from general requirements and the state of the technical solutions, they also heard about first experiences in file-based operation reported by some broadcasters.
The event triggered lively and engaged discussions, where the unbiased exchange of information worked to everyone's advantage. With all agreeing that a common approach would be best, broadcasters were pleased to hear that vendors are very much open to taking common requirements on board.
The upcoming EBU QC Workshop (7-8 November) will provide another opportunity to continue this cooperation.
