The EBU Production Technology Seminar 2012 will address what broadcasters have to take into account in their transition:
- from Standard Definition (SD) TV to High Definition (HDTV) and tri-media productions;
- from tape-based production to file-based production and storage systems;
- from peak metering to loudness metering and levelling;
- from brown to green production and using LED lights in studios;
- from manual Quality Control to automated QC;
- from provisiong of programmes for passive consumption to more ones for more active participation;
- from richer to leaner times, and everything that implies.
When changing practices, it generally helps to seek guidance from those amongst your peers who've already made the change, or are at least further along the learning curve; the early adopters. The EBU is extremely aware of this and has therefore packed its flagship production seminar in 2012 with topics related to transition. Some examples:
Kicking off the first day: keynotes about the production in a multilayer organisation and the opportunities of Green Production will bring participants into the right mood for comprehensis Use Cases. These wil include a look at Tri-Media production and Quality Control in the 3D live production of Roland Garros and other sports events. Quality is an issue for codecs too, so in the afternoon the latest contribution codec technologies will be assessed. A few presentations later, the floor is taken by a speaker who will share his experience of a recent UK wide file-based exchange project.

Day two opens with a look at light emitting technologies that may replace current CRT reference monitors; OLEDs, but 'normal' LEDs too will be covered, as they can unexpectedly impact production qualitly - you'll get an update on the latest developments in this field. The subject of Quality has a Session all of its own in the second half of the morning, including use cases on how the RAI and NRK deal with automated QC. One particular aspect of QC, loudness verification, will be covered in the afternoon, together with other topics related to audio. From 16:30 a set of four tutorials is provided, covering: FIMS, Camera Measurements, Workflows and Hybrid Radio.
Day three will concentrate on how to use storage and metadata in practice. Using third party storage with internal systems is a hot topic, assigned a specific presentation. The role of cloud storage will be' defogged' too. A complete metadata session will showcase (amongst others) the EUSCreen archive project, social networks in NoTube, and the use of EBU Core metadata. The last presentation is reserved for Super High Vision - but in high frame rate and better colours - you will be awash in pixels!
