Finding a worthy successor to the CRT monitor

The CRT (cathode ray tube) has served as the standard video production monitor for decades, but with the introduction of new flat planel displays it has been necessary to evaluate which of the newer technologies could replace the CRT.

The EBU has been working on this topic for more than five years, producing a specification for Grade 1 monitors, guidelines on how to measure the performance of monitors, and also guidelines for the manufacturers of domestic displays. As of now only two displays from two different manufacturers have come close to meeting all of the requirements for a Grade 1 display.

This new video, recorded at the EBU Production Technology Seminar last month, provides an introduction to the topic and explains the strengths and weaknesses of the two most successful candidate displays so far.
