| With the FIMS 1.0 specification having been finalized in February, this month's NAB 2012 trade show in Las Vegas offers the first chance to see it in action. EBU and AMWA (Advanced Media Workflow Association) are the lead sponsors for a set of demonstrations at the International Research Park, booth number N517/N617.
FIMS, the Framework for Interoperable Media Services, is a joint project of the EBU and AMWA. Together with a wide range of industry partners, the project is building a vendor-neutral common framework that will enable equipment from different manufacturers to be connected together. This kind of interoperability - based on what is known as a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) - will be essential to enabling the transition to file-based and IP-based (Internet Protocol) workflows in broadcast, production, post-production, distribution and archiving.
The demos at NAB 2012 will come from Bloomberg, Cube-tec, IBM, Sony and Triskel, and will include the first implementation of FIMS 1.0. This first phase specification addresses acquisition, file transfer and file transformation (e.g. transcoding). The next phase of the work will address further use cases that have been identified by the FIMS Business Board, a group of user companies. These could include new services such as repositories / MAM (media asset management) and quality control.
NAB 2012 takes place in Las Vegas from 16-19 April. | |
