Digital Radio Summit: Profile 1 radios by Christmas

The EBU today hosted a Digital Radio Summit to discuss to discuss receiver profiles and the status of digital radio services based on DAB / DAB+ / DMB – or the WorldDMB family of technologies.

Simplifying the offering

EBU TECHNICAL was the main organiser of the summit held in conjunction with consumer electronics vendor association DIGITALEUROPE (formerly called EICTA) and the WorldDMB organisation. The Summit participants heared about the plans for use of the digital radio receiver profiles as a means of simplifying the consumer offering.

Three profiles

Digital Radio Receiver profiles help group features such as multimedia functionality into receivers. This grouping helps broadcasters understand what the characteristics of the receivers in their market are, and helps the consumers understand what to expect from their equipment and service provider.

There are three profiles:

1. Standard Receiver (including DAB / DAB+ / T-DMB audio)

2. Rich Media Receiver

3. Multimedia Receiver.

Welcome move

Vendors are targeting the launch of Profile 1 receivers for the Christmas 2009 market. Many countries already have DAB and DAB+ services on trial or in commercial service, so the advent of receivers incorporating the receiver profiles is a welcome move.
