In 2008, Engineers from the EBU, industry, and the trade body World DMB, developed requirements and then specifications for a set of digital radio 'profiles'. EBU TECHNICAL has now issued an accompanying official Recommendation.
| Anywhere, anyone, everywhere
The basic idea is that if the public buys any radio anywhere in Europe, which complies with anyone of the three profiles, it will always work anywhere in Europe (for FM and Digital Radio, and for AM as well in some countries). Depending on which country you are in, you may not get all the 'visuals' that some broadcasters hope to provide, but you will always get the audio of the radio station. If you buy the highest profile, it will provide anything everywhere, but will probably cost more. |

Breakthrough
If this plan is successful it will be a major breakthrough for digital radio. The fact that broadcasters and CE device manufacturers have agreed on the profile specifications should be a major confidence booster for Digital Radio deployment. The first radios complying to Profile 1 are already appearing on the market.
