Transition is the buzzword for this year’s EBU Production Technology Seminar, taking place in Geneva at the end of this month. The need for broadcasters to be present on a much wider range of platforms, and to produce content that can be used across multiple contexts, will require some fundamental changes to production methods and technologies. This three-day seminar will equip participants with the knowhow to make the most of the opportunities that arise with changing consumption patterns.
Roberto Pomari, head of business development at RSI, the Italian speaking division of the Swiss public broadcaster, will deliver an opening keynote describing how to build “tomorrow’s broadcaster”. The Swiss public broadcasters will complete a full migration to HD production in the first months of this year and RSI is well on the way to developing as SOA-based (Service Oriented Architecture) production platform, the next step in its digital evolution. Roberto Pomari’s keynote presentation will draw together many of the themes to be explored in more detail throughout the event.

The second keynote presentation will deal with another topic that's growing in importance, namely that of green broadcasting. Many broadcasters have started looking at the environmental impacts of their activities, but these are notoriously difficult to quantify. The BBC’s new carbon calculator, named Albert, is a concrete step in the right direction, allowing programme teams to accurately assess the carbon footprint of their production. Richard Smith, who is BBC’s sustainable production manager, will explain how Albert is helping the broadcaster to work towards a target of a 20% reduction in energy consumption by 2013.
