At the first of its session held entirely online, the EBU Community on Implementing Open Innovation (IOI) gave the floor to the ‘Future Media Hubs’, a VRT initiative run in close cooperation with RTBF.

Projects such as the Sandbox Hub, Video SnackBar Hub and Open Labs Hub were showcases as part of a series of innovations presented to an audience of more than 70 attendees. These included new tools (e.g. Radio France with startup InQuality), new applications (e.g. RTBF presenting its Control Room 42) and adapted content on new platforms to reach and serve younger audiences (e.g. NRK’s efforts on Snapchat, BBC R&D’s community of practice, and more).

The main goal of the Future Media Hubs initiative is to foster innovation and accelerate the development of the media industry and their local ecosystems by facilitating partnerships between public and commercial media organizations. Participants were also reminded that the key to innovation comes from trust and leveraging the support of top management to gradually change the corporate culture to one that makes innovation the new norm.

As Andreas Gall, Chief Technology Officer at Red Bull Media House, and one of the speakers, emphasized: “Besides all the technical stuff, innovation is above all human centric.”

The event was moderated and chaired by Robert Amlung from German broadcaster ZDF. IOI is coordinated by the EBU Academy and the EBU Technology & Innovation Department.
