What is public AI?

This webinar covers core aspects of Public AI as a concept, as a movement, and as a set of products. Connections to the concept of Sovereign AI and the public media sector are also discussed.

Public AI is an approach to artificial intelligence that treats AI systems as shared civic infrastructure rather than proprietary products. It focuses on open, auditable models; locally or nationally governed compute; and deployment through trusted public institutions such as libraries, universities, cooperatives, and public agencies.

The goal behind Public AI is not just open-source code, but durable institutions that ensure access, accountability, and alignment with local norms – so that AI capacity can be governed democratically, adapted to specific communities, and sustained over time as a public good rather than captured by a small number of firms.
