High Dynamic Range (HDR) is considered a key feature for the success of new UHDTV services. Two characteristics defined in ITU-R Recommendation BT.2100 are Perceptual Quantizer (PQ) and Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG).

In the absence of standardized methodology for HDR quality assessment, four independent test labs (EBU, IRT, Orange and RAI), each with a strong past experience in conducting subjective tests, joined forces to define a test plan for the evaluation of HDR technologies in distribution, including HDR contents encoded in HEVC as distribution format at various bit rates, as displayed by both HDR and SDR (Standard Dynamic Range) panels.
