TPEG based service gathers new EBU Members

The EBU has been involved with the development of TPEG technology for several years now. It was initially seen as a new means of supporting Traffic and Travel Information (TTI) services for Digital Radio delivery, but it now is reaching out to many more applications, including webdelivery for public transport and possibly weather information.

Expert Group

TPEG pronounced “T-Peg” stands for Transport Protocol Expert Group. The "Transport" part refers to the content it encodes (traffic and travel information) and to the fact that it specifies how to transport the data from service providers to end-user client devices. TPEG has been designed to be highly agnostic with regard to delivery platforms; instead it focuses on hierarchical data structures to provide language independent information content for all client types. TPEG has been standardised by CEN ISO in two series of Technical Specifications covering Binary and XML (tpegML) physical formats.

The EBU saw the potential that TPEG technology would give to their requirement to exchange pre-edited TTI content with cross-border traveller information. As a result the EBU TTI Message Exchange System (MES) project was initiated using a Geneva based server collecting tpegML messages supplied by EBU Members.

The MES active database is available only to EBU Members, rendered in their native language regardless of source country, and contains messages which may then be used in local TTI services covering typical journey needs across borders.

Software available for EBU Members

Members can integrate their MES connectivity with existing TTI message generation systems. New participant VRT has opted to use an EBU developed web client to deliver their content. The TPEG based tools allow for easy implementation at minimal cost.

The MES project is looking forward to specifying additional features to include not just road information, but also for example public transport information. For more information on EBU's TPEG service, please contact: Andrea Borgnino.
