Taking IT file-based production to the next level

Three EBU TECHNICAL groups working on IT-based media production system design aspects have joined forces to take file-based production to the next level. The groups concerned are working on: analysing Common Processes (P/CP), Metadata (P/MAG) and Networked Production (P/NP).

OASIS - SOA

Significant progress has been made on the definition of best practices for news and drama production. The goal is now within reach to come with an implementation independent set of requirements and definitions of 'production services' based on the OASIS reference model for Service Oriented Architectures (SOA), that is a set of user friendly, business relevant, reusable resources.

Interoperability

This EBU work should contribute to an improved interoperability of products and future-proofness of systems. The work will now continue by adding the information needed to describe and handle content and processes, also known as 'metadata'.

The plan is to test the approach on the specific case of 'content ingest'. Results will be shared with the industry during the 4th quarter of 2009, which may be followed by implementation specific guidelines on how to describe Web Services or a similar solution.

Survey on formats used

A survey will also be conducted on video and audio encoding, wrappers and metadata formats used by Members. The intention is to produce a core set of recommended formats for use by broadcasters.
