SMPTE looks at higher dimensions and cutting edge technology

National Semiconductors in Silicon Valley hosted the March 2010 SMPTE Technology Committee meetings. Over five days experts from the industry and users discussed new standards to push technologies in the professional field of media creation and exchange further. The constructive participation of over 70 industry experts underlines the huge commitment of the media industry to standards and interoperability.

SMPTE 101

SMPTE conducts its work in eight technology committees: Essence, Networks, Time and Sync, Broadband, Metadata-Registers, Television, Digital Cinema and File Structures.  The work is further divided into projects and study groups. Probably the 'hottest' item on the agenda was formed by the meetings of the "3D Home Master" working group, which actually consists of four subgroups: Graphics, Image Formats, Subtitles and Metadata.

Other work of the engineering week focussed on video over IP, the Sync and Time Label group, progress on interoperability of metadata and MXF for file-based production and reference display technology. On top of this SMPTE is reaching out to new studio interfaces with 20Gbit/s (!), and new 4096 line production image formats.

See you in Geneva

EBU TECHNICAL has been a continuous supporter of the SMPTE engineering work and the cooperation between both bodies has resulted in many benefits for the media industry and EBU Members. EBU will host the September 2010 SMPTE meetings in Geneva. Interested parties can find  more information on the SMPTE website or contact Dr Hans Hoffmann (EBU).
