Promising P2P projects

The P2P work the EBU and its Members are participating in got some extra exposure over the past two weeks. To start with there was the IBC, where the P2P-Next Project's first achievements were demonstrated on a Pioneer set-top box. This together with a paper presented at the IBC Conference marked the first trade-show output from the European project that started less than a year ago.

P2P Seminar

This week the EBU TECHNICAL Group D/P2P held its seventh meeting and organised a short seminar to update industry peers on what is happening with P2P Technology. Speakers included representatives from AHT, BBC, Arvato, NRK, Octoshape, Philips, Pioneer, Thomson and Vusion. The speakers not only highlighted recent developments, but also provided room for interesting discussions. Further in early October the EBU will host the P2P-Next Project's consortium meeting at its premises in Geneva.

CE standardisation

According to senior engineer Franc Kozamernik, responsible for EBU TECHNICAL's P2P work, these activities reflect the warm interest P2P delivery technology continues to receive. "Only by studying its background and experimenting with the technology hands-on, we can learn about the pros and cons of P2P. We realised this several years ago already. Timing is everything in this area, that's why I am very happy to see the standardisation process (for P2P in CE devices) kicked-off in DVB succesfully earlier this year. That underlines our industry's eagerness to move into new territory."

Presentations from the seminar are available to all EBU Members. Just log in and go to the Publications Library.
