An important new EBU strategic programme was given the go-ahead at last week's Technical Committee meeting in Geneva, with the approval of its Terms of Reference. The Integrated Media Production Strategies (IMPS) programme will assist EBU Members in integrating production processes that have, in the past, been considered largely as "islands". In a media landscape that is increasingly multi-platform and multi-format, there are many potential benefits to be derived from integrating the production workflows for TV, radio and online content.
Traditionally broadcasters have produced content for their different platforms using separate facilities. Attempts to access content for integrated and networked production have therefore been costly and have usually relied on customised, and therefore expensive, solutions. Open system architectures for integrating production have not been available.
The IMPS programme, which will focus initially on news and sport, will address these topics from organizational, editorial and technical points of view. The requirements of EBU Members will be gathered, with activities to include site visits and sharing of experiences in order to develop best practice guidelines. Definitions and descriptions of typical elements (production, play-out platforms etc.) will be developed. The group's outputs will be discussed with broadcast equipment vendors and, where necessary, technical projects will be established. The group will be chaired by Herbert Tillmann, Technical Director of BR (Bayerischer Rundfunk).

EBU Members are invited to join the IMPS programme, which can be done via the group's homepage. The first site visit is provisionally scheduled for April, with details to be circulated in the coming weeks.
The EBU Technical Committee also last week approved the Terms of Reference for a strategic programme on Green Production and Broadcasting, along with those for project groups on ACIP II (audio contribution over IP), Future Storage Systems and LED lighting. The EBU/AMWA FIMS Project (interoperability in software based environments) was also approved.
