Although it’s just less than a year since the MUSCADE (Multimedia Scalable 3D for Europe) project began, the work has already yielded sufficient interesting results to report in a first public Workshop. MUSCADE is one of a number of EU FP7 projects which are exploring aspects of future 3D TV, including the use of more than two cameras to help deliver a greater feeling of depth in the 3D images.
Lightfield displays
Partners assembled together some months ago at the Fraunhofer Institute in Erlangen, Germany and recorded test material using 4 HDTV cameras in a special rig, and captured the sound using a soundfield spatial microphone system. The one hundred attendees in the recent Workshop, which was held mid December, were able to see for themselves how this material has now been processed to yield convincing multiview images for auto-stereoscopic and ‘lightfield’ displays.
In addition to the presentations and panel sessions, the project partners provided several practical demonstrations which drew the attention of the participants, especially the prototype 4 camera rig. Was it George Orwell who wrote “2 Cameras good – 4 Cameras better!?” More information on the MUSCADE project is available from the project’s website. You can also contact Dr Hans Hoffmann (EBU) . |
