Japan ITE awards EBU

The ITE, the learned Japanese society, the Institute for Image Information and Television Engineers made an Engineer from EBU Headquarters, David Wood, an Honorary Member in May 2010.

The ITE encourages excellence in the science and technology of television. Its founding body, the Institute for Japanese Television, was formed in 1933. Over the years, several non-Japanese engineers have been invited to become Honorary Members. To date they are John R Pierce (who coined the termed ‘transistor’ and developed ‘PCM’), Joseph Flaherty (who drove forward the use of Electronic News Gathering and High Definition Television), and Prof Mark Krivocheev (who chaired the ITU groups through the crucial period of digital television).

David Wood was presented with Honorary Membership at the ITE General Assembly, in Tokyo, in May 2010. He has been associated with ITU standards for quality evaluation, digital television, high definition television, and most recently 3D-TV.

Lieven Vermaele, Director of EBU Technical, said ‘the award reflects our commitment to encourage open standards for broadcast technology, in which David has been very involved for many years’.
