Newsroom systems have been around for a long time, but their focus is shifting. In order to cope with the ever-changing way that consumers take in information, new room systems now place more focus on integrated production for TV, radio and online. They also require efficiency to meet consumer needs (e.g. higher speed for the same or reduced costs!).

In brief, news room systems need to be able to allow teams of editorial people perform storytelling on a mix of platforms in a way that is more integrated than ever before, regardless of how small they are (e.g. regional team or a large team of national broadcasters).

EBU Tech 3365 was developed by a technical subgroup of the EBU Strategic Programme on Integrated Media Production Strategies (IMPS)

It sets out the context described above and lists a number of fundamental requirements for cross media planning, acquisition and search. It provides a modular description of what a news item consists of (e.g. audio, video, timing etc.).

Furthermore, it gives information on system requirements (related to system management, interfaces, metadata, and archives) and business process requirements (covering acquisition, ingest, editing and publication, exchange and metadata extraction).
