The EBU senior elected body for technology matters, the Technical Committee, held its 54th meeting started in October 2010 at the EBU in Geneva, chaired by Dr Alberto Morello, Director of the RAI broadcasting research centre in Turin. The elected members of the TC discuss and decide policy for technology innovations. The current Membership includes senior engineers from the RAI, ARD/ZDF/IRT, NRK, HRT, BBC, RTP, GRF/FT, RTR, SRG-SSR, NPO, RTVE and CT.
| Briefings and publications
A main part of the meeting was devoted to briefings on progress from the EBU's 'Strategic Programmes Groups' and 'Expert Communities' . Hot topics included lip-sync, loudness and the developments in video and displays. IP networks, metadata, file-based integrated production and SOA were also on the agenda.
The TC approved new publications and the set up of new Groups. One example is the publication of EBU Tech 3320, an updated version of the very well-known EBU Grade 1, 2 and 3 video monitors specification. | && | A. Morello (RAI) & L. Vermaele (EBU) |
Transitions and interactions
A key strategic theme for EBU Members is the transition from current HDTV systems into new systems, and its impact on EBU Members' operation and business. 3DTV and Ultra High Definition were on the Agenda too. Another strategic task is the interaction with other, world-wide media technology organisations, such as ETSI, DVB, ITU, SMPTE, WBU, and others. The goal is to develop common positions on the development of media technologies.
