The EBU P/LOUD Group jumped on the opportunity to present its progress at IBC 2009, exactly one year after the Group's kick-of meeting during the same event. At the EBU stand in hall 10 a large 'Bendy Meter' (courtesy BBC Research) served as an eye-catcher. P/LOUD participants were present to answer questions and explain what solutions are foreseen.

From peak to loudness

The loudness work's main message is that audio metering and normalisation is to change. Currently most broadcasters use QPPM (Quasi Peak Programme Meters) to measure audio material. This is mainly done for a technical reason; to prevent clipping. But peak meters do not give a good impression of the 'loudness' perceived by the audience. By shifting from peak to loudness metering and normalisation, audio engineers can provide better alignment of programmes and thereby remove a major complaint regularly expressed by viewers/listeners: annoying loudness jumps.

Recommendation & guidelines

The P/LOUD Group is now working to specify the details on this new practice. Five pieces of advise are currently being prepared:

1. The main Loudness Recommendation, including the target loudness level.

2. A document explaining how to measure the Loudness Range.

3. Detailed Practical Guidelines, helping engineers implement the new techniques.

4. Distribution guidelines, advising (cable) distributors on how to work with loudness.

5. Meter requirements, specifying what functionality loudness meters should offer.

Positive feedback

The feedback received at the IBC showed a huge interest in the Loudness work. Although the Group already includes more than 100 broadcaster and manufacturer representatives, still more colleagues joined the work over the last few days. Also several national loudness iniatives indicated a desire to align with the EBU Group's work. For more information on this topic, please contact: Frans de Jong (EBU).
