EBU engineer Yvonne Thomas wins technology award

3DTV specialist Yvonne Thomas has won the first  price in the ARD/ZDF-sponsored "Women and Media Technology" awards, which were presented on September 2 at the IFA 2011 consumer electronics convention, in Berlin. She received the award for her Diploma thesis, in which she investigated how stereoscopic perception depends on different display sizes. She also studied the acceptance of 3D.

Third time

It was the third time the Technology awards ceremony was held. The prices for the top three spots are 5.000, 3.000 and 2.000 euros respectively. The second place went to a thesis on "Development of a User Interface Concept for Viewing Temporal Video Annotations". A paper titled "Efficiency of Time-Frequency-Slicing with handheld reception" came third.

Third dimension

The media technology domain is traditionally male-dominated. Yvonne hopes to be able to encourage more women to find good jobs in the broadcasting industry. Her wining the price can serve as an example. Yvonne currently works as a project engineer in the EBU Technology & Development department. Her work focusses on 3D technologies.
