David Wood wins SMPTE Certificate of Merit for paper on 3D

The Society of Motion Picture & Television Engineers (SMPTE) has presented David Wood, EBU Deputy Director, Technology and Development, with its prestigious Certificate of Merit for a paper he authored on 3D technology.

Mr Wood received the award at a ceremony on October 27 at the SMPTE's Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition, at the Renaissance Hollywood Hotel, Hollywood.

A memorable night

He said: "It's always nice to receive prizes, but there were many others receiving far more prestigious awards than me. What I will take away from this more than anything is meeting some people I have long admired. It was a truly memorable night."

Important to stay realistic

Mr Wood's article, Understanding Stereoscopic Television and Its Challenges, appeared in the October 2010 issue of the SMPTE Motion Imaging Journal . Commenting on his paper, Mr Wood said: "3D is rightly popular with the movie industry, and continues to attract the public to the world's box offices. But I wanted to outline some of its limitations, as well as its potential for evolution over the coming years. It is an exciting technology, but it is important not to overplay what can be done with today's 3D."
