These days it's possible to walk into a shop and buy a camcorder that will shoot high (or even ultra-high) definition pictures. Such is equipment is relatively cheap, certainly compared to professional cameras, and you could be forgiven for wondering why broadcasters don't save money by taking the cheaper option. The latest video in the David Wood on... series explains why: Quality Headroom.

In fact camcorders destined for the consumer market are sometimes be used by broadcasters, for example in news coverage, where it might be difficult to get professional equipment to the "scene of the crime" quickly enough. However, the need for quality headroom means that high quality professional equipment should, as a rule, be used in programme production at all stages of the process. In the new video, David Wood uses the analogy of a popular childrens' party game to explain why.
