The 6th Annual Conference of the IABM (International Association of Broadcasting Manufacturers) reports that the broadcasting suppliers' industry is coming up to speed again and leaving the recession behind. This positive message was presented at the IABM Annual Conference, which was held 2-3 December 2010.
Good business growth rate
The IABM recently collected the financial data that gave rise to this good news. The figures also predict a steady, continued growth over the next year. This notwithstanding, John Ive, the Director of Business Development & Technology at the IABM, told the conference that the broadcasting industry is undergoing a massive change; a paradigm shift, in fact. File-based High Definition workflows for cross-media production are a focal point of change.
Improved cooperation needed
The paradigm shift was underlined by a presentation given by Ferry Kasselaar, Manager of RTV facilities and IT at the Dutch public broadcaster NOS. He emphasised the need to improve the cooperation between manufacturers and broadcasters when it comes to implementing complex new IT-based production systems.
Dr Hans Hoffmann (EBU) briefed the conference on how technology trends will affect both the broadcasters' and suppliers' businesses. He called for new partnerships between the industry, user organisations such as the EBU and standardisation organisations to jointly address the challenges of cross-media production. As he noted, this encompasses a wide area, ranging from high quality 'immersive' HDTV programmes to HbbTV, 3D TV and mobile.
