The EBU has recently published two documents, Tech 3335 and Recommendation R 118, both of which concern television camera imaging performance for high definition signals.
Tech 3335 describes a set of measurements that should tell you all you need to know about a camera's ability to produce high definition television pictures.
Recommendation R118 is an innovative, pragmatic document that recommends the adoption of a practical approach to maximize the number of affordable HDTV programmes by acknowledging current camera technology limitations and to grade, or Tier, HD cameras according to their technical specifications and measured quality based on the results of the tests that are specified in EBU Tech 3335.
Knowing which tier a camera belongs to can be used when selecting appropriate equipment for a variety of different programme genres.
As well as these two documents, a software package has been compiled that provides practical support for the measurements described in Tech 3335.
More information on these documents and the software package is available HERE.
Feedback welcomed
Users of Tech 3335 are encouraged to contact the EBU if they identify any fundamental issues with any of the described measurements or if they wish clarification, or indeed to participate in the EBU's future work on camera testing. Please contact Mr Adi Kouadio ([email protected]).
