The Technical Steering Committee of the MXL project has published version 1.0.0 of the Media eXchange Layer (MXL), marking its transition from Release Candidate status to a stable production release.
MXL is a core component of the EBU’s Dynamic Media Facility (DMF) framework. It defines mechanisms for the standardized exchange of media and associated metadata between systems in software-based production environments.
With the 1.0.0 release, the specification and its reference implementation are considered stable for production use. Vendors and developers can now integrate MXL support into products and services based on the finalized version.
The development process included alpha versions and release candidates, which were tested by members of the EBU community and industry participants. Feedback from these early implementations contributed to the finalization of the 1.0.0 release. The process from initial development to the full release was completed in approximately 15 months.
The EBU expects that vendors will begin announcing MXL-compatible products in the coming months, including at industry events such as NAB Show 2026.
The full release, including documentation and source code, is available via the public repository https://github.com/dmf-mxl
Further updates to the Media eXchange Layer are planned as part of the ongoing development roadmap.
