The EBU is committed to diversity and equality, and EBU Technology & Innovation particularly supports educational initiatives in STEM activities via the ITU’s global campaign “International Girls in ICT Day”, which EBU T&I now links with its own Kids in STEM day.
This year’s International Girls in ICT & Kids in STEM Day centered around an engaging theme: Radio. Twenty-two enthusiastic local primary school children participated in an exciting day of learning, and discovered why radio remains one of the most reliable and accessible forms of communication.
The students arrived prepared, having selected interview topics at school beforehand. They divided into two groups – girls and boys – and worked together to build a radio studio and produce a live broadcast. Their activities included creating jingles, preparing for interviews as both presenters and guests, designing a programme schedule, learning about mixers, and producing filler segments. There were also rehearsals to ensure they felt ready before going live to broadcast their programme to classmates. All of this was accomplished in just a few hours, giving the students hands-on experience of working in a media environment.
A highlight of the day was also a visit to the EBU Newsroom and Eurovision Master Control Room. These facilities are central hubs for managing and distributing live and recorded content to audiences worldwide. The children had the chance to see firsthand how media operations run on a global scale.
At the end of the day, the participants gained practical insights into the world of radio and media, along with a sense of accomplishment. This experience offered valuable exposure to technology and communication, inspiring curiosity and interest that may influence their future aspirations. Who knows how this day may influence their paths in lives!
