ABU Digital Broadcasting Symposium opens in Kuala Lumpur

This year marks the 12th annual ABU Digital Broadcasting Symposium (DBS). Taking place in Kuala Lumpur from 29 February until 03 March 2016, the theme for this year’s ABU Digital Broadcasting Symposium is “Innovating Digital Connections.”

During the DVB session, Simon Fell, Director of Technology & Innovation at the EBU presented a review of the findings from the recent World Radio-communications Conference (WRC-15) held at the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) in Geneva, Switzerland last November. Highlighting the outcomes of the Conference, he encouraged countries in ITU Region 3 that have not yet completed their digital television roll-out to accelerate their work to ensure that a broad range of services is available before further pressure to release spectrum allocated to broadcasting comes up in future Conferences.

“Encouragingly there was a demonstration of an attractive smartphone equipped with a DVB-T2 receiver and reports of a recent study carried out by Sony of mobile reception in Asian territories. This proves that DVB technologies allow great flexibility in the market. If smartphones adopt such receivers and if networks are designed correctly for mobile reception, the benefits to consumers will be apparent,” said Mr Fell.

Delegates from 56 countries, representing over 200 organizations are scheduled to join the event. On 03 March, leading industry figures will look at “Digital Radio for the Future” and discuss the challenges and opportunities going forward.
