How to create a personalized, unified user experience

Today, a broadcaster's audience expects to access content easily and seamlessly. They want to consume content when, how and where they want. Moreover, they expect to be able to consider a device as a window to a personalized media experience, no matter what the size, the resolution or the quality of the distribution.

Currently, it is not easy for broadcasters to create a unified user experience between online content (tablets, smartphones, and computers) and media devices (television, radio). For companies like Netflix or Spotify, the process is simple because they control the whole distribution chain and can create apps for each device. However, a broadcaster’s world is far more complex and it is not as easy to do this because broadcasters rely on standards like HbbTV to automatically launch their apps on television.

But, there is a solution for this! The EBU has been working together with public and private broadcasters, and manufacturers to develop the Cross-Platform Authentication Protocol (CPA). This protocol specifies how to securely associate an online identity with an IP-connected device and enables personalization.

The prototype in the video shows how CPA enables social recommendations on an HbbTV portal and demonstrates the ability of a user (like you or me) to share live broadcast from HbbTV with a friend using a second screen application. The social recommendation that you recommended to your friend is then available on-demand on their HbbTV or tablet.
