The Framework for Interoperable Media Services (FIMS) project is an important initiative that promises to make IT broadcast programme production less problematic in future. The FIMS partners include EBU TECHNICAL and many leading broadcast industry organisations. A major demonstration first was given at the NAB Convention this year. The demonstration showed how a production workflow could be automated using FIMS so that content can be directed and automatically, and seamlessly, transferred from one part of the production chain to another. A series of presentations by specialists, complemented the demonstration.
More companies join FIMS
The AMWA and the EBU are the driving forces behind this project and according to Jean-Pierre Evain (EBU), the reactions received at the NAB were most encouraging: "Many NAB attendants visited the FIMS demonstration booth and key decision makers from different sectors of the broadcasting industry have learned about the project's aims and status". Also several companies have expressed their desire to join the existing group of organisations in running the FIMS project to create a high quality specification for Service Oriented Architectures (SOA) in file-based media production. So I am very pleased with what we have achieved."
