On 18 October 2015, Euroradio will re-transmit the competition “Let the people Sing” from Munich, Germany. During this event, the EBU will pilot producing a visual radio slideshow.
The same infrastructure and system will be used as that done for visual radio for sport events. A key topic at IBC 2015, Senior Project Manager, Mathias Coinchon (EBU) presented “Visual Radio Production for Sports.” To access the IBC paper, click here.
On the production side, the technology consists of a simple production platform on a laptop that can work automatically and be influenced by an operator in the field, thereby keeping infrastructure costs and resources down.
Producing a slideshow alongside a radio programme is something new for classical music. The idea is to add branding elements and programme associated pictures to the event. This could become a regular service in the future that Members could use to feed their mobile applications, DAB+ digital radio or RadioDNS hybrid radio and websites. It is important to note that this is not a video stream but a slideshow, so listeners do not usually watch constantly watch it but rather glance at it from time to time.
The EBU is planning to record this stream for replay in the future. For example, visual streams could be added to the Euroradio concert files.
