Loudness

Loudness normalisation standards and practice for broadcast and beyond.

Scope

The Loudness group addresses the shift from audio peak-normalisation to loudness normalisation — one of the most significant changes in professional audio in recent decades. The EBU's PLoud group created the widely used EBU R 128 loudness recommendation, which provides a common, vendor-independent, and relatively simple way to measure and normalise loudness across broadcast and streaming platforms. Our work continues that tradition, keeping R 128 current and extending loudness normalisation to new audio contexts.

Objectives

We revise EBU R 128 as needed to keep it relevant to changing production and distribution environments. We develop loudness approaches for next-generation audio (NGA), for radio production, and for cinematic content. We work to ensure that loudness normalisation practice keeps pace with new audio formats and delivery platforms, maintaining consistency in the listening experience across all PSM output.
