Travelling to Italy

The documentation required to enter Italy varies according to your country of origin:

  • For EU citizens and citizens of countries that have signed the Schengen agreement, a valid identity card is sufficient as an alternative to a passport.
  • Citizens from non-EU countries may enter Italy with a passport valid for at least three months after the planned date of departure from the Schengen area.

Depending on your country of origin, you may require a visa to enter Italy. You can request a visa from the Italian Embassy or Consulate in your country of residence and it will generally be issued after 90 days. To find out which countries require a visa to enter Italy, please visit esteri.it. On this website, you can enter your nationality, your country of residence, the duration of your stay (less than or more than 90 days) and the reason for your trip. Remember that once you arrive at the border, the authorities may request documentation justifying your reasons for and duration of your stay in Italy.

The hotels with which RAI have negotiated request full credit card payment in advance and have a 100% cancellation penalty. Once the contingency is complete, the rates are no longer guaranteed.

Travel information from the aiport to the city centre

Naples-Capodichino International Airport is served by a number of international hub gateways in particular the Rome-Fiumicino International Airport “Leonardo da Vinci” and Milan Malpensa Airport.

The guide to the Naples International Airport services is available as an app for Android and iOS.

The airport is located 5kms from the city centre. The journey time can take between 15 to 30 minutes depending on the time of day.

To get to the city centre, delegates can use a taxi or the shuttle bus.

Taxis

The taxi lane is located in front of the Arrivals hall.

Flat rates are available for the city centre, which include extra charges to/from airport, night ride, luggage etc. The fares are valid for the whole day (H24 on weekdays and holidays). The application of the pre-determined rates indicated on the tariff must be requested by the user at the beginning of the ride and without the possibility of refusal by the taxi driver, who must, before departure, issue a duly completed receipt with the indication of the path chosen by the user and the amount established in the tariff. The meter displays "F0.00" when this service applies.

The predetermined fare is applied for the total number of passengers on board the taxi. The tariff currently in Italian and English, must be displayed clearly on the backrest of the front seat of the car to allow the user to freely choose, before the start of the race, one of the two fare systems.

For further information: please visit the Commune of Napoli website.

Both credit cards and Euros are generally accepted, however, please check before you get into the taxi that credit card is accepted and the credit card maching is working.

If you would like a pick-up service, please refer to the Naples Airport Taxis website.

Shuttle bus

Alibus is the fast-connecting bus line between Naples Airport and the City Centre. The service provides direct, rapid and efficient connections between the Airport and the Central Station, Piazza Garibaldi.

Journey time approx. 15 mins.

Bus tickets can be purchased online, or at the vending machines located on the ground floor of the Arrivals area.

Practical information

Assembly venue

The Technical Assembly will take place at the Partenope Conference Centre located on the seafront of Naples in the central area. The address is:

Centro Congressi Partenope
Via Partenope 36
80121 Napoli

Social programme

There will be a Welcome Reception in the evening of 12 June. Details to follow.

Weather

In June, the temperature ranges from 20° to 27° C.

Currency and payment

The Euro is the official currency.

Cashpoints/ATM can be recognized by the sign Bancomat (pronounced with long "a's" as "Bahn-ko-maht")

The airport also has a number of currency exchange and banking facilities include a number of ATM cashpoint machines throughout NAP's Terminal 1 as well as several bureau de change outlets, offering competitive rates of currency exchange.

Credit cards (Visa and Mastercard) are widely accepted, but street market vendors, taxi cab drivers, smaller shops, and eateries may not accept credit cards and usually prefer to be paid in cash.

Local custom

Tipping is not standard in Italy, but it is common to add about €1 per diner to tip restaurant waitstaff for good service or round up the bill.

Power plugs

For Italy there are three associated plug types, types C, F and L. Plug type C is the plug which has two round pins, plug type F (elsewhere referred to as "Schuko") is the plug which has two round pins with two earth clips on the side and plug type L is the plug type which has three round pins. Italy operates on a 230V supply voltage and 50Hz.

It is suggested that you bring a Type C adapter as this should fit in most outlets with two or three holes.

Crime and policing

Like in most cities with tourists, theft is a common crime so always keep an eye on your belongings and do not leave them unattended at any time. Take sensible precautions against street and car crime.

Don’t keep your passport, credit cards and other valuables in the same place; use the inside compartments in bags where possible. Carry your bag across your body rather than on your shoulder.

Pickpockets can work in teams: one to distract you while the other one goes into your bag. Keep your belongings close to you in restaurants and bars. Don’t be distracted around tourist attractions and cash points.

Emergency numbers

112 (throughout Europe – operator will put you through to relevant service)
118 for Medical Emergencies
