While the Red Planet graces the cover of the new issue of tech-i magazine, the M.A.R.S. approach here refers to media distribution on planet Earth. In an article on page 10, Antonio Arcidiacono and Darko Rajkaj introduce a new white paper from the EBU that proposes a strategy for ensuring essential media services remain available to all citizens, even in times of crisis. The white paper iteslf is available from our publications library.
In his editorial for Issue 62 of tech-i, EBU Technology & Innovation Director Antonio Arcidiacono argues that there is an urgent need for Europe to invest smartly in its media future. He points to the massive gap between innovation investment in the USA and China and what has been done in Europe:
"In Europe the threat can only be averted if we increase investments in large-scale development projects and industry-wide collaboration in media innovation with a medium-to-long-term perspective. There is a precedent for this kind of pre-competitive cooperation on the continent, with projects like GSM and DVB in the 1990s paving the way to the development of cellular phones and digital broadcasting, with a subsequent global impact."
