Do you work in the technical field or you are interested in technology? This year, the EBU was proud to host the first ever panel discussion on the topic of Women + Technology during the 22nd Technical Assembly! The aim of the panel discussion was to highlight the topic of bringing more diversity into the workplace, especially in the area of broadcasting technology.

Background

The EBU strongly values diversification in the workplace and encourages more female professionals to join the industry. Looking at our statistics over the last five years, we realized that across the board, the participation of women in technical groups and at technical seminars is low. This panel discussion helped us analyze the reasons why this might be the case, look at possible barriers and how to overcome them, showcase best practice and give recommendations for the future.

Panelists

We were pleased to have a such a great line up of speakers during the event who shared their personal experience and how they see the workplace transforming to meet new consumer demands and take advantage of new technologies. Panelists included:

  • Galina Fedorova (RTR, Russia)
  • Dagmar Driesnack (IRT, Germany)
  • Barbara Lange (SMPTE, United States)
  • Brigitta Nickelsen (Radio Bremen, Germany)
  • Frode Hvaring (EBU, Switzerland)

Video project: share your inspirations!

In the lead up to the event, the group asked other EBU Members and women interested in technology to send short video clips from their phone answering a few key questions –  what inspires them about technology, what possible barriers exist and what advice they would give to others – before the event. These clips were combined by one of our interns to create a short video to raise awareness of the topic and stimulate the discussion. Watch the video here.
