BR’s Radio departments are successively moving from the historic building in the Munich’s city centre to a new campus in Freimann, once occupied by TV only. Initiated in 2011, the ambitious BR3 Project, was set to break down the silos of radio, TV and online not just in the organisational structures but also in the applied media production technologies and infrastructures. Presently, BR’s numerous radio stations are on the move, aiming to have left the old Studiobau by the end of 2025.
The first unit that went into operation in Freimann was the new radio drama studio. It has been specially designed to be capable of producing 3D-Audio.
To both inaugurate this new studio and commemorate the centenary of the genre itself, the radio drama Blocked Under Ground was accomplished in January 2024.
Creator: Regine Elvers has taken the plot of the first 1924 BBC commission, Richard Hughes' "Danger", and shifted it into the present day: four people are trapped underground after a tube crash. While water seeps into the tunnel, they desperately search for an exit and contact with the outside world. A dramatic setting requiring a thrilling and immersive sound scape.
Project manager: Stefanie Schmitt will explain the background, strategy and process of the project from a management perspective and will give a virtual tour of the premises, while production engineer Gerhard Wicho will introduce the technical and infrastructural concept of the new complex, including MoIP with DANTE and SMPTE 2110, and explains the details of the studio and BR's 3D audio production approach.
