The EBU has just published a special edition of its quarterly online magazine "EBU Technical Review". According to the Deputy Director of EBU Technical, David Wood, this special January edition was created to answer requests for more information on the IBC 2008 demos of the Super Hi-Vision Ultra-HDTV system:

"We had so many people asking us to write down what was shown, that we decided to ask the experts involved to fill a special edition of the Technical Review. It is the most effective way to make sure the story is told in an authoritative way."

The three articles

The special edition consists of three articles and an Editorial by David Wood.

The first article is written by the inventors of the Super Hi-Vision system, NHK and the authors not only describe the IBC-2008 live Super Hi-Vision demos, but also put the system in the context of a long R&D roadmap. They explain the outstanding technical developments that have already been achieved and those that are nearing completion.

Next comes the BBC article, which focuses more on the practicalities of the IBC demo, in particular the London-Amsterdam link over public IP networks. In addition, the authors explain how Super Hi-Vision could be an interesting target for the BBC's Dirac video codec.

The final article, written by RAI, describes the Turin-Amsterdam DVB-S2 satellite link at 22 GHz and also looks at possible future SHV delivery systems, both satellite and terrestrial.
