Almost 15 years ago the EBU and SMPTE foresaw the need for standardising a professional file format. The famous 'bitstreams' work from the mid ninetees, led to the development of the Material Exchange Format (MXF), officially standardised in 2004. In two EBU Technical Review articles, Pedro Ferreira (MOG Solutions) provides an easy-to-read overview of the why and how of MXF.

MXF part I

Part I of the series discusses the basic concepts of MXF. It starts with a few words on the EBU-SMPTE groundwork and the reasons for creating a wrapper, then it moves on to a quick technical overview, and it ends with a section on interoperability, metadata and the future of MXF. Part II will be published later and go more in depth.

EBU & MXF

The EBU continues MXF-related work in various areas. The currently most relevant is the EBU HIPS-MXF Group , which addresses interoperabillity issues. This work is led by Mr Christoph Nufer (IRT). Other activities include the EBU MXF Masterclass and the work on subtitling and MXF .
