The International Broadcasting Convention (IBC) this year drew over 45.000 attendees, which makes it one of the largest professional media events in the world. EBU TECHNICAL provided an update on its innovative work at the EBU stand in hall 10. EBU Members and EBU staff presented updates in the Conference Programme.

Awards

The Convention attracts 'papers' on media from all over the world. Of the several hundred papers submitted for consideration, about 30-50 are selected for presentation following a detailed selection process. Of these, seven are selected for separate publication as the best submitted papers.

This year, BBC's Mark Waddell won the Conference Paper Award for his contribution 'Compatibility challenges for broadcast networks and white space devices'. EBU TECHNICAL engineers Adi Kouadio and David Wood were also among the seven selected. Adi's paper concerned tests made on standards' converters and video compression, and David's paper concerned 3D TV. In addition, EBU Engineer Jean Pierre Evain's paper was selected for presentation.

The Arab States Broadcasting Union (ASBU), a sister organisation of the EBU, received an Innovation Award for the MENOS content exchange network.

Parallel meetings

EBU TECHNICAL director Lieven Vermaele looks back at a succesful IBC presence. "The IBC is a good venue to share and connect and we used that opportunity. What is easily overlooked is the amount of work that goes on 'behind the scenes' to harmonize technological developments and drive standardization. During the IBC, several of our Groups met to progress the work on (amongst others) HBB, Video over IP and Loudness. The industry feedback we received at our booth indicates our work addresses a lot of serious needs'.

Dr Hans Hoffmann provides an update on HDTV.
