Hybrid cars are hot, but the use of the hybrid concept is not limited to technology on wheels; there is hybrid radio too. At the Geneva International Motor Show last week, the EBU supported the demonstration of the latest developments in radio technology. Together with Rouge FM (a swiss private radio group), Swisscom Broadcast (the main RTV broadcasting operator in the country) and VDL equipment, a special digital radio DAB+ multiplex was set up for the duration of the motor show. The system was built around EBU TECHNICAL's open source visual radio production platform, which allows for the creation of visual radio services using DAB+ slideshow and RadioDNS. A collection of adapted Nokia DAB+ headsets and Symbian mobile phones was available for the show's visitors to use with the services. And they of course could simply sit down in one of the latest cars equipped with DAB+ radio receivers.

Cars important for radio

The services provided consisted of a mix of regular radio programmes, special Rouge FM programming and dedicated radio channels for individual car manufacturers. The trial allowed for the latest technology to be demonstrated in a real-world environment. Mathias Coinchon (EBU) explained why this is relevant: "Cars are the most important listening environments for radio outside of the home, so availability of digital radio in cars is a key enabler for succesful digital radio services."
