Internet radio

What about Internet Radio?

The Internet is recognized as being an attractive delivery platform for radio programmes. Streaming websites have helped to greatly enhance radio programme delivery and there are literally thousands of stations from all around the world that are available. With the democratization of Internet access it is possible to listen both at home using a computer or wifi radio and on mobile phones. Soon it will be possible to listen in cars.

The online audience still, however, accounts for less than 5% of the global radio audience and problems would arise if all radio delivery were transferred to Internet platforms. These problems include high distribution costs (network efficiency), operator-dependance, the inherent vertical market and the end of free-to-air delivery, for instance.

Hybrid radio (broadcast-broadband)

The hybrid broadcast-broadband approach has a high profile currently. In this scenario, broadcast networks efficiently deliver the premium content  free-to-air whilst broadband networks (Internet), when available, enrich the experience, offer interactivity and personalisation.

The EBU is currently active in RadioDNS promoting this approach.
