RadioHack is a hands-on event for software developers, integrators, engineers from broadcasters, service providers, network operators and manufacturers. It is a unique opportunity to meet developers, learn how to set up new services, learn about existing open tools, contribute to developments and, of course, make contacts. It is also an opportunity for participants to bring back knowledge and tools in their organisations.

Topics & Projects for RadioHack 2014

The preliminary list of topics/projects for this year is:

  • RadioDNS Hybrid Radio with RadioVIS and RadioEPG services. Radio DNS is now an ETSI standard, and its designers and experts will be present to answer questions and assist with implementation. A prototype hybrid radio implementation of the Samsung Galaxy Express handset will be shown.
  • EBU RadioDNS Manager and Content Manager. Activate RadioDNS hybrid radio in a few click using EBU platform and learn how to use the content manger to create visuals for your radio station.
  • The EBU Cross-Platform Authentication group will show its proposed authentication protocol for personal services on media devices (including radios and TVs) based on OAuth 2.0, with a working reference implementation.
  • DABberry, a complete hybrid DAB+ radio receiver based on the Raspberry Pi, developed by IRT. This platform offers broadcasters the opportunity to experiment with new radio services, to demonstrate, test or develop them further using an API.  Designers will be present and participants can build a DABberry if they wish; for this it's necessary to contact Alexander Erk (erk@irt.de) in advance and bring your own Raspberry Pi kit (with SD and power supply).
  • Software Defined Radio. Having started with CRC's mmbTools some years ago, there is now a community of developers using it for real transmissions and continuing development for SFN compatibility, distributed encoding, satellite fed DAB gap fillers, etc. On the receiving side, recent Android devices are now powerful enough to perform the whole demodulation, decoding on the host processor, thus offering a generic receiving platform.
  • Updates on other topics such as chaptering for radio programmes and the GENIVI Alliance open source software platform for in-car infotainment.
