The debate for television image quality continues to evolve. With a growing interest throughout the world in Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV), the question of good test content (especially in terms of sports images) remains a hot topic.
Together with host broadcaster and EBU Member SRG SSR, the EBU initiated a project to shoot footage of the Zurich European Athletics Championships in August last year. The goal: to get content to represent UHDTV Phase 2 Requirements, such as Higher frame rate (HFR), Higher dynamic range (HDR) and Higher resolution.
The use of sports content is usually difficult to capture due to rights issues. However, in this case, Eurovision owns the rights to the Zurich Athletics 2014, making it a unique opportunity to shoot and provide real sports content in innovate formats.
SRG SSR, TPC, ARRI, Grass Valley and Kamerawerk provided production equipment, on-side support, and expertise during the post-production process. The production event included one of the first SMPTE ST2084 live created sequences.
