EBU Production Technology Seminar highlights
03 February 2010 |
|---|
The EBU Production Technology Seminar 2010 got of to an impressive start with Marco Derighetti's (SRG-SSR) presentation on how the Swiss national broadcaster succeeded in broadcasting the opera "La Bohème" live from an apartment complex! The audio planning and execution was especially staggering. However, it was not the first time Swiss television went to extremes with large scale live television. Last year "La Traviata" was broadcast live from... a railway station!

Shocking images
Another highlight of the day was provided by Tom Poederbach, who introduced the audience to DSLR photo cameras' video capabilities. It was not only the violent action scenes of a film excerpt that shocked the 132 professionals in the room, but also the unexpectedly high quality that these large-sensor devices are capable of producing. Although the shortcomings for professional video applications are multiple (no timecode, limited recording time, no zoom correction, ...), the benefits are as well (lightweight, cheap, loads of top quality lenses, ...). A truly revolutionary development in our quickly changing media industry. Lens quality |

The organising committee's chairman, Per Boehler (NRK), gave the Seminar participants a quick tutorial on lens quality. Worryingly enough, the knowledge about lens quality and how to measure it, is becoming very rare amongst broadcasters. Not only are the experts themselves disappearing - Per jokingly remarked that he is one of his organisation's last walking "dinosaurs" - Per is seriously concerned that he uses what is maybe the last operational lens-testing facility at a European broadcaster!
